The Review:
Overall, I really enjoyed reading Ellie's Emotional Adventure.
The book begins by introducing us to the idea of emotions and how vastly they can vary. Then, we jump into the concept of sharing our emotions so that we can better understand them ourselves. From happy to sad, many to few. It all comes back to the idea of expressing these feelings, even prompting the reader to think about it out loud. The book is written with a nice rhyme scheme that keeps the pages flowing smoothly, and there's even an emotion wheel at the end as an extra resource for the reader to help express themselves. Another really cool thing about this book is that the author, Corrie, is actually a registered psychotherapist! Using her real-world knowledge to help guide and teach the reader on their own personal journey.
The illustrations really pop on each page, adding a delightfully colorful charm to the story.
The Mini Interview:
To wrap things up, we've asked Corrie to answer three quick questions for us!
What was your inspiration for the story?
My inspiration for this story comes from my work as a mental health therapist. I work with children, and one of the major resources in my work is using storybooks and stories I made up for puppets and toys. I began really enjoying reading and creating stories with child clients. For the stories I made up, they would be used in session and shortly forgotten. I began to think to myself "I should really write these down" and this then transformed into "I should make my own book of my stories". This then led to the Ellie's Emotional Adventure series being written. I use my own education and experience as a therapist to inform what is included in the books to create fun educational mental health resources for parents, caregivers and anyone with children in their lives. The goal is to continue to create fun and accessible mental health tools so everyone can learn about emotions at home.
What was your favorite book growing up?
I have always really loved reading and books. I am not sure if I could ever pick one to be my favourite. Books have always been a huge part of my life and a passion I continue to engage with. If I had to choose one of my favourite books as a kid it would be The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. I could never get enough of the pictures that had the small sparkly spots. I could have looked at those illustrations for hours.
What piece of advice would you give to aspiring children’s authors?
If I could share anything with aspiring children's authors it would be don't let the fear of judgement keep you from sharing your story. Any field with art or creative expression often includes the fear of judgement. I can only imagine how many wonderful and incredible stories and illustrations are not shared due to the fear of how others' may react or feel. The reality is, people will always have judgements on whatever another person does if they are judgemental. Do not let this keep you from sharing your wonderful, magical and insightful stories with the world. You will find many more people who will want to support and celebrate than you will who will judge.
