The Sock Monster Chef: Cooking With Socks 101 Trisha Keesmaat
The Artists:
Trisha Keesmaat is a yoga teacher, singer/songwriter, and the mother of three beautifully wild boys who are always cooking up something creative. With the rare gift of a quiet moment, you can find her gardening, singing to her pet chickens, and dreaming up children's stories - especially ones about quirky monsters!
Dorota Rewerenda is a children’s book illustrator passionate about bringing stories to life through rich, colourful and heart warming artwork. Nothing gives her more pleasure than transforming words into pictures to spark curiosity and provoke imagination in the young minds of children (and some adults, too!).
The Story:
"Meet Fred, the Sock Monster, a hungry little chef with a taste for the strangest snacks. From polka dot socks to pompom roasts, Fred can turn laundry day into a feast fit for a monster party!
With rhymes that bounce, recipes that giggle, and monsters that dance the night away, The Sock Monster Chef, is a deliciously funny read-aloud for kids (and grown-ups brave enough to try sock-a-roni!)."
The Review:
The Sock Monster Chef wastes no time! We're immediately whisked into a whimsy-filled world where a monster named Fred is preparing his favourite dish: socks! Fred begins describing all of the different creations he likes to make out of socks for his friends to try, and is even inspired to write his own cookbook. The story is told through a great rhyme scheme that keeps the reader engaged and excited to see what's to come next. Overall, it's a really fun tale and a lovely follow-up to Trisha's previous title: The Hat Monster.
The illustrations from Dorota are fantastic from cover to cover. In a magical style, they truly help bring Fred's sock creations to life.
The Mini Interview:
To wrap things up, we've asked Trisha to answer three quick questions for us!
What was your inspiration for the story?
My inspiration for the Sock Monster Chef was simply my personal quest to find where all the socks in my household seem to keep disappearing to. I don't know how many loads of laundry I have done to find there is not a single pair of matching socks in the end. I had lots of ideas but settled on Fred, The Sock Monster Chef and his hilarious culinary escapades!
What was your favorite book growing up?
Jillian Jiggs by Phoebe Gilman!!! Absolutely my favourite book growing up.
What piece of advice would you give to aspiring children’s authors?
Be silly and have fun with it!
