Furry Big Sister Brittany Oliver

The Artists:

Brittany Oliver I am a Registered Midwife living in the Niagara region of Ontario. My dream life consists of raising a strong woman (and my three year old is well on her way), catching babies and writing stories. I have a website witbybrit.com and an instagram page @wit.by.brit where I share my poems about motherhood and midwifery.

Timna Green is a children's book illustrator, She is a self-taught artist.

As the daughter of a puppeteer and art ceramic artist, her early artistic making was greatly encouraged and supported. Timna enjoys illustrating books that incite fantasy and imagination, she enjoys bringing stories to life and creating a world where anything is possible.

The Story:

"How will the loving family pup adjust to life when her "Alphas" bring home a brand new baby?

She has spent her whole life being adored and spoiled but when her "Alphas" come home one day with a very special "bundle" she wonders if they will have any time left for her. Quickly, this caring pup realizes that her "Alphas" are doing the best they can and through the challenges of new parenthood and life's big changes, a deep family connection is formed and a new friendship blossoms."

The Review:

Overall I quite enjoyed reading "Furry Big Sister"! It was a heartwarming tale that many will find they can relate to.

The book begins with a young couple and their dog. Of course, the dog is showered with endless love and attention but then one-day mom and dad come home with a new baby! While the dog begins to find that it's no longer the center of attention all the time, it does its best to accept the new baby into their small pack. The book ends on a really sweet note, sure to tug at the heartstrings of both children and parents. I always really enjoy books about animals especially when they're based on true events and I feel this book is absolutely perfect for anyone with a dog that's expecting a child in their life. (It would also make for a great baby shower gift!)

I feel that the illustrations lend really well to the story! The fun and colorful images draw the reader in and really help bring the bigger picture to life.

The Mini Interview:

To wrap things up, we've asked Brittany to answer three quick questions for us!

What was your inspiration for the story?

The book started as a poem I wrote after I had my daughter in 2020. It was pretty special to watch her grow next to my precious dog Bella (whom I spoiled for a decade prior to having a kid!). I fell in love with the poem and decided to make it into a book to share with other families.

What was your favorite book growing up?

My favourite book from childhood is "Pocketful of Nonsense" by James Marshall. It is a collection of silly poems. I read it over and over with my brothers.

What piece of advice would you give to aspiring children’s authors?

My advice to aspiring children's book authors is to BELIEVE in yourself! Everyone's journey is different and it is only you who can inspire and motivate you to where you want to go. I am proud of where I am today and I know that there is still so much to learn and experience. I've had doubts along the way and although they can still surface, it is that strong BELIEF in myself that guides me in this unfolding journey of being an author! You can do it, and you got this!! :)
